Genetic algorithms, genetic programming and evolutionary computing are terms that fall within the general sphere of “Evolutionary Computation”. We have previously noted that Agent-based Models can be regarded as a form of evolutionary computing, and indeed the MASON toolkit (see Section 8.2.11) has been produced by the Evolutionary Computing Laboratory at George Mason University. A useful source of information regarding many of these topics is the “Hitchhiker’s Guide to Evolutionary Computing”, available as an online and downloadable document set edited by Heitkötter and Beasley (2000).
